Australia
Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901.

The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef. A referendum to change Australia's status, from a commonwealth headed by the British monarch to a republic, was defeated in 1999.
Population: 19.9 million (July 2004 est.)
0-14 years: 4 million; only 3% have regular contact with a local church.
Our Ministry:
The work in Australia commenced in 1949 by American missionaries Rev. & Mrs. VF Anderson along with Miss Evelyn Lundell. Good News clubs was one of the basic ministries begun. The work quickly spread to Queensland and Victoria and later was operating in all Australian States with hundreds of GNCs, 5 Day clubs, party clubs and training for children workers and volunteers. During the 1990s the work declined, but has recently started to increase. On May 19th 2001, Rev. Edgar Schroeder was commissioned as the National Director of CEF Australia. They have resigned.

Different training ministries are being conducted to equip children’s teachers, including a Webworld Teacher Training for those who have questions about reaching children.

Promotionals during conferences in churches and Bible colleges as well as partnerships with AWANA, Jesus Video and the 2003 Year of the Child have yielded encouraging results.
